Springtime is so wonderful. Warm weather and sunshine, everything turning green, the lawn, the trees, the hay fields, and then there are new flowers blooming every day. Gone are the short lived crocuses, daffodils, tulips, here for a bit longer the lilacs, forget-me-nots, and woodland hyacinths.
This week on the back line, overlooking the flats, is a smattering of very pale yellow iris in full bloom. But just today, up close to the house, one beautiful, buttery rich, yellow iris popped out. Surprise! I had forgotten about that iris. A dear friend, Jane, gave it to me, bulb and all, a couple of years ago. It hadn’t bloomed last year…but this year it did. Big and bright, boldly colored, and as fragrant as any flower can be, Jane’s vibrant yellow iris shouted, surprise!
This bloom is such a special surprise…because Jane left us this past November, just a couple of months shy of her 90th birthday. Jane left a big hole in her community, church, circle of friends, and family. But she left gifts, pieces of her personality, lots and lots of memories. And for me, today, a surprise.
